1 Quels obstacles divers rencontrons-nous

Pour s'approcher du propitiatoire !

Mais qui connaît la valeur de la prière ?

Ne souhaite pas s'y rendre souvent !

2 Le prieur fait disparaître les nuages sombres ;

Le prieur gravit l'échelle que Jacob a vue ;

Donne de l'exercice à la foi et à l'amour ;

Apporte toutes les bénédictions d'en haut.

3 En retenant la prière, nous cessons de lutter ;

La prière fait briller l'armure du chrétien ;

Et Satan tremble quand il voit

Le saint le plus faible à genoux.

4 N'avez-vous pas de mots ? Ah, détrompez-vous :

Les mots coulent à flots quand vous vous plaignez,

Et que vous remplissez l'oreille d'un compagnon d'infortune

De la triste histoire de tous vos soucis.

5 Si la moitié du souffle ainsi dépensé en vain.

Était envoyée au ciel en supplication,

Notre chanson joyeuse serait souvent,

"Ecoutez ce que le Seigneur a fait pour moi ! "

1 What various hindrances we meet

in coming to the mercy seat!

Yet who that knows the worth of pray'r

but wishes to be often there!

2 Pray'r makes the darkened clouds withdraw;

pray'r climbs the ladder Jacob saw;

gives exercise to faith and love;

brings ev'ry blessing from above.

3 Restraining pray'r, we cease to fight;

pray'r makes the Christian’s armor bright;

and Satan trembles when he sees

the weakest saint upon his knees.

4 Have you no words? Ah, think again:

words flow apace when you complain,

and fill a fellow-creature’s ear

with the sad tale of all your care.

5 Were half the breath thus vainly spent

to heav’n in supplication sent,

our cheerful song would oft’ner be,

"Hear what the Lord hath done for me!"
